Kentucky Fried Foodie is a culmination of my long journey towards finding new, and interesting foods from everywhere. It started early, but some of the milestones came in middle school and high school.
I for some reason became enamored with yuppies, and was given a small espresso machine as a Christmas gift in 7th grade. This began a long, winding journey not only with coffee, but pastries, biscotti, tea, and other beverages. It helped me to understand the breadth and scope of how one simple ingredient can expand into many different categories and link with so much other food into a winding tapestry, one which it is impossible to fully navigate.
In high school, I first genuinely tried cooking after watching Goodfellas with a dear friend late at night. Desperately hungry from the food scene, and with it being late night in rural Kentucky, we made do with what was in my grandparents’ kitchen. In some kind of miracle, the baked ziti I managed to make from pantry and fridge ingredients delighted my entire family, and from then on, my mom began buying cookbooks for me, and ingredients from the Ft. Campbell commissary when she would drive to get bargain groceries. This began my love of cooking, and my exploration of how to use ingredients, and as simple an act as it was, it was profound, for it allowed me and my mom to connect in a great shared love of good food, and inspired us to go on many trips simply to learn more about what we did not know about cuisines, and food, and cities.
These beginnings and many other lessons inspired me to start this blog. My desire to save money while eating great, my love of lesser known ingredients, food secrets, techniques, has expanded into my desire to save others money while eating great, and showing others great restaurants here in western Kentucky, and where to get the best special ingredients to make cooking even more fun as well as delicious.
Here I give you my inspiration. On this website, I pour out my heart and hope you cherish the things I cherish. I promise to do my best to let you all know where the good deals are, where the great food is, and where to go online to get those special ingredients. I’ll also discuss issues in the world of cooking and eating, wining and dining, and where my mind is at a certain point. My hope is that you visit here often, to see what’s on my mind.
